Abuse ruins Rio for Gabby Douglas

American Olympic gymnast, Gabby Douglas, has hit the headlines over the course of the games in Rio, for all the wrong reasons.

She has faced a lot of criticism, particularly surrounding the fact that she didn’t put her hand on her chest during the national anthem, whilst standing on the podium.

Gabby was on the podium after her team won gold in the women’s team all-around.

Critics have also judged Douglas on various other aspects of her behaviour and appearance throughout her time at the games. These included complaints that she didn’t cheer on her fellow gymnasts loud enough and criticism of her hairstyle.

A chain of unfair attacks have made for an upsetting Olympic experience for an incredibly talented gymnast.

Rio did not go to plan for the athlete, who seems to have gone from adored athlete to unpatriotic enemy.

In addition to this, she failed to reach the finals of the individual all-around competition, an event that she won gold at during London 2012.

Hopefully Gabby is able to pick herself up and put the attacks behind her as she looks forward to the next tournament in Tokyo.
