Alesha Dixon says negativity around Meghan Markle is ‘shameful’

Alesha Dixon admitted that it was shameful that there was ‘negativity’ surrounding the marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex due to Meghan’s heritage.

When the pair married on 19 May, Meghan became the first mixed race person in modern history to marry a British senior royal.

‘It’s just so interesting that in 2018 anyone would ever come up against a problem because of the colour of their skin,’ said Alesha.

‘It’s a real shame. So, we clearly have more work to do,’ she added, saying that she hopes to one day live in a world where conversations about racial diversity in society is not needed.

The Britain’s Got Talent judge has claimed that the balance is slowly ‘getting there’ but that there is still room for improvement and that she encourages her four-year-old daughter to embrace her own heritage.

Alesha, 39, is mixed race and speaking to Fabulous magazine, suggested that in 2018 you would think ‘it would be balanced, but I still think there is an issue that has to be addressed’.

‘Every young person needs to have a character that they can identify with and feel included by,’ she added, ‘at home, my daughter Azura has got this long blonde wig that she loves, and she’s obsessed with Rapunzel, but you need to have balance’.

‘It’s important that she understands her curly hair is beautiful, too.’

Alesha recently revealed she wants to have more children – but is worried she’s too old to get pregnant again.

‘Not a day goes by without me longing for another baby,’ she admitted.

‘I don’t know whether it will happen given my age but I adore the idea of a large family and I hope I will be lucky.

Alesha and Azuka have been dating for more than 10 years, and are parents to four-year-old Azura.
