‘Birth of a Nation’ is a new period drama film, which has been written, produced and directed by Nate Parker – who also plays the lead role of Nat Turner.
The movie was recently released in the US on 7 October, but is not due to premier on British screens until 20 January 2017.
Birth of a Nation gives a new narrative of the years of slavery in America. It shows the slaves in a different light to their usual portrayals – featuring them fighting back against their white oppressors.
Main character Nat Turner is a preacher, who leads a rebellion of black slaves in Southampton County, Virginia.
After its overwhelmingly positive reception at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Birth of a Nation sold to Fox Searchlight for a record $17.5m [£14m]. The film was also chosen for two of the festival’s awards, the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award.
Since its release to screens across the US, Birth of a Nation has received a number of standing ovations. Many have praised the movie for its powerful portrayal of this section of history (1830s), from the perspective of the slaves who did fight back.
To hear the other side of the story, Birth of a Nation is a must-see on its UK release.
