Marvel has unveiled that a black pre teen genius will be their latest comic book superhero. The comic book giants revealed that Lunella Lafayette, who is also know as ‘Moon Girl’, is to be the protagonist of their new book.
The character of Lafayette is to present a new and refreshing take on the 1978 Marvel comic ‘Devil Dinosaur’, which involved the adventures of a red Tyrannosaurus Rex and a young caveman-like child known as ‘Moon Boy’.
In Marvel’s new book Lafayette may take over the Moonchild role however there is nothing cave-like about her, the new ‘Moon Girl’ is to be an intellectual virtuoso within the narrative. Reportedly ‘Moon Girl’ will be similar to an ‘Inspector Gadget’ but with greater wit and sophistication, as a result of her “unpredictable alien DNA’.
Whilst talking about the characterisation of ‘Moon Girl’, assistant editor of the publication Emily Shaw stated “That idea of feeling sort of isolated on your own during that very early time of life we thought was really compelling, and could really resonate with a lot of readers”.
‘Moon Girl’ and ‘Devil Dinosaur’ emerged when Marvel’s team of creative realised that they did not convey many books and characters that appealed to all ages and groups. In the book, the unlikely duo of the vigilant dinosaur and the girl genius will seek adventures and excitement across the concrete jungle of New York.
Emily Shaw remarked, “A greater number of readers are looking for characters they can identify with, and above all, with the aim that any reader, whatever their background or lifestyle, is capable of transcending their own identities to see themselves in a mirror of entertainment for 20 or 30 minutes without difference”.
