Shortly after 8.30am this morning, Thursday 28 January 2016, the body of a man was found in the canal in Ashton-Under-Lyne.
A passerby rang emergency services after they spotted the corpse in Portland Basin, near the town centre.
Emergency crews were called to the scene, behind the Portland Basin Museum on Portland Place, and discovered a body in the water.
The man is white and believed to be in his 40s or 50s, police said.
A specialist diving unit was scrambled to Portland Basin to recover the body on Thursday morning.
A GMP spokesman said it was too early to establish how the man died or whether there are any suspicious circumstances.
An officer has been carrying out door-to-door enquiries for any information in regrads to incidents that may have been witnessed over the past 24 hours.
Officers are still at the scene, having closed off part of the pathways leading to the bridge facing Portland Street South.
