A 74-year-old British man, who was due to be publically flogged in Saudi Arabia, is to be released despite reports of strained diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and the UK.
Karl Andree was ordered to face 350 lashes for the possession of alcohol after being in jail since his arrested in August of 2014.
Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has remarked, “This is a great outcome and I’m grateful to minister (Adel) Al-Jubeir and all other people who have been involved.
Following the announcement of Andree’s release and return home, his son Simon said, “It is great news if what the Saudi’s and the government is saying is true. Hopefully we’ll have him home next week”.
David Cameron, who had intervened personally within the case, tweeted “Good to hear news from #Saudi that #Karl Andree is to be released within the week”.
