Celebrity Watch: Played and played out!

J Hud to play Aretha Franklin?

Nothing has been confirmed yet, but Jennifer Hudson is certainly in the running to play soul singer Aretha Franklin in an upcoming biopic

Award-winning Jennifer Hudson is apparently the favourite to portray Aretha in a film produced by Sam Bernstein, the man behind US box office smash Straight Outta Compton.

Though no contracts have be signed or even drawn up, there are talks of Jennifer taking on the role that will focus on Aretha’s rise to fame in the 60s and touch upon her relationship with abusive ex-husband Ted White.

Jennifer, Aretha or Sam are yet to comment on this claim made by an “insider” to The Wrap but TNT will be keeping an eye on this one!

Straight Outta Compton given the Cosby treatment

Not long left until Straight Outta Compton comes out in the UK and we can’t wait! Already a massive hit in America, Dr. Dre & co. are well and truly rolling in the dough and revelling in the glory of the success of the film so far and there is more to come!

Ever the businessmen, Dre and Ice Cube are taking full advantage of this new height of fame but not all is as well as they’d like it to be for with the good comes the bad and the claims some women who say they are exes of Dre’s are really bad.

Accusations of being beat up and controlled from women such as R‘n’B singer Michel’le and Dee Barnes will make you watch the film in a different light. Scenes in the film which were included with the intention of adding comedy end up looking sexist and misogynistic.

Since the details of comedian Bill Cosby’s wrongdoings against women came to light thanks to several accounts from a number of his victims, it is rightly difficult not to listen when any woman makes similar allegations. The situation isn’t helped when the exploits of N.W.A are well-documented and Dr. Dre is on record speaking about his colourful past.

Oh dear…

Jidenna or Iggy Azalea, who copied who?

In another case of déjà vu, Classic Man Jidenna and Fancy Iggy Azalea are reminding us of the Pharrell/ Robin Thicke vs. Marvin Gaye debacle that involved the plagiarising of song.

Apparently Jidenna’s camp didn’t want beef though and backed down pretty quickly, allegedly admitting they sampled Iggy’s song and now credit her with it.

However, DJ Mustard isn’t happy about Iggy getting royalties for a sound that he claims originates with him.

The heavyweight producer had a (now deleted) rant on Twitter about how both Iggy and Jidenna stole samples from many of his songs.

Whatever, this is one of those debates where too many people have differing opinions about.
