City and United in Champions League action

With Manuel Pellegrini’s Manchester City currently 2nd to Juventus in their Champions League group, Tuesday’s trip to Sevilla looks to be a crunch fixture. Sevilla are only three points behind City in the table therefore The Sky Blues will need to earn themselves at least a draw if they are to avoid a battle to remain in the qualifying positions. Spanish maestro David Silva has missed training yet again this week an in not expected to recover from his ankle injury in time to feature, but Raheem Sterling is set to perpetuate his purple patch in City colours.

Lethal striker Sergio Agüero and resolute right-back Pablo Zabaleta will both miss the game with injuries, however City’s squad could well include new signing Fabian Delph and Frenchman Gael Clichy in Tuesday’s encounter, as they both return from injury. City defeated the Europa League champions 2-1 at The Etihad Stadium when the teams met two weeks ago, but they can expect a much more gruelling match in front of the Sevilla faithful.

Manchester United’s Champions League group is currently wide open with only three points separating PSV Eindhoven from leaders Vfl Wolfsburg, consequently there is an added pressure associated with United’s remaining home fixtures. United face CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford on Tuesday night but are likely to be without central defensive midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, as he missed the open part of the squad’s final training session. Schneiderlin’s absence may present Michael Carrick with the opportunity to redeem himself after missing a penalty in the League Cup shoot-out.

Wayne Rooney has displayed many shortcomings throughout the opening of the season, but Tuesday’s match could be the occasion the striker needs in order to reinvigorate his worth. Marcos Rojo has looked stern since returning to United’s starting XI and the versatile Argentine has filled the gaping gap left by the unfortunate Luke Shaw. United are not the only team with injury problems though as CSKA defender Aleksei Berezutski and midfielder Roman Eremenko are doubts for the match. The two teams played out a 1-1 draw a fortnight ago, but United’s possession based football should be vital in their next clash.
