City and United suffer defeat in Champions League Openers

Manchester United and Manchester City were taking part in Champions League action last night and both clubs suffered defeats. United were beaten 2-1 away to Dutch team PSV Eindhoven whilst City were aggrieved to leave Juventus with a 2-1 defeat.

With 15 minutes on the clock Luke Shaw received a stern tackle from Hector Moreno which brutally broke his leg. The tackle on Shaw should have resulted in United being awarded a penalty whilst the left-back’s injury caused a delay of ten minutes. Towards the latter stages of the first half EX- PSV star Memphis Depay opened the scoring for Manchester United with a finessed left footed shot. However despite United’s dominant play during the first half, a goal from Moreno dampened their spirits on the stroke of half time.

Although Manchester United were undoubtedly on the front foot in the opening stages of the second half, they appeared tender when PSV had the opportunity to counter attack. Subsequently on the 56th minute Luciano Narsingh profited from United’s attacking intent, after he headed in past David de Gea. United have left themselves in a precarious position and could struggle to make it through the group stage of the competition.

Yaya Toure created a golden opportunity for Raheem Sterling early on in the match but Sterling failed to find the requisite finish. City were fortunate to take the lead in Turin as Vincent Kompany escaped punishment for his part in the opening goal. Kompany belligerently pressured Giorgio Chiellini in to heading the ball in to his own net and wheeled away in celebration as City took the lead.

However City only managed to hold their lead for 13 minutes before Mario Mandzukic tapped in a looping cross from Paul Pogba. Mandzukic’s goal was the first that City have conceded in competitive action this season. Manuel Pelligrini’s men were unable to halt the advances of Juventus following the goal, and in the 81st minute Álvaro Morata’s left-footed shot beat Joe Hart from 25 yards.
