Starring Will Smith, Collateral Beauty, is a film about overcoming ‘great tragedy’ and re-forming connections after retreating from life.
Will Smith plays a successful New York advertising executive named Howard. Howard has given up on life after the loss of his daughter. His concerned friends try to inspire him to overcome his grief by reconnecting with him.
These connections with friends are not enough to bring Howard out of his state of grieving. Howard uses another method to relieve his pain. He seeks answers from the universe by writing a diverse range of letters addressed to Love, Time and Death.
The letters are responded to in unexpected personal responses. Howard comes to understand how the deepest loss can reveal moments of meaning and beauty.
The subject of grief and loss is a topic which all members of the film community can relate to. During experiences of grief many people decide to withdraw from life.
Naomie Harris, who stars in the film, says death ‘teaches us’ to ‘cherish the time that we have’. Just as the film highlights, ‘there’s something beautiful about that’.
Will Smith was working on the film at the time that his father passed. He says the performance, the movie and the ideas are ‘deeply personal’. This did not stop Smith from delivering another inspirational performance.
The movie has a diverse and talented cast also including actresses Kate Winslet, Keira Knightly and Helen Mirren. The diversity of the cast creates a sense of equality.
The movie was released nationwide on 26 December 2016.
