Community Shield proceeds donated to Grenfell Tower fire victims

Funds from the 2017 FA Community Shield will be donated to the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire.

FA Cup winners Arsenal are to play Premier League champions Chelsea on August 6 at Wembley Stadium.

The FA is hoping to raise £1.25m for the victims, with support from Arsenal, Chelsea and sponsors McDonald’s.

Families of the victims, survivors and emergency service personnel from the scene will be invited as guests to the game.

With the search and recovery operation ongoing, seventy-nine people are missing or presumed dead from the blaze that engulfed the tower block.

Expectations for a full forensic search of the building are estimated to be by the end of the year.

FA Chairman Greg Clarke hopes that the fixture can help the suffering being felt because of the tragic incident.

“Whilst only a football match, we hope that in some small way through the Community Shield we can help,” he said.

The annual fixture is typically the match that kicks off the professional season in England.
