Contact Theatre on Oxford Road has appointed architectural practice Sheppard Robson to carry out a remodelling of the building worth £6million.
The current building, which sits quite a way back on Oxford Road, is already quite striking but having been the same since 1999 it is time for a change.
In order to uphold its reputation as a nationally- leading contemporary arts venue that focuses on young people, the capacity will be increased and public areas such as the box-office, bar and meeting spaces will be redesigned.
In a plan to improve the visitor experience as well as its visibility from Oxford Road around 300sqm will be added to the building but the original structure and design will be retained.
Arts Council of England has already earmarked £3.85m towards the development and Corridor Manchester partners, the University of Manchester and Bruntwood, have both committed significant in-kind support.
