Jean Alexander – who is best known for playing Hilda Ogden in Coronation Street – has sadly died.
She passed away peacefully in hospital on Friday 14 October, at the age of 90.
Jean portrayed Hilda for over 20 years, from 1964 to 1987, making her one of the soap’s most iconic characters to date.
William Roache, who plays Ken Barlow in the soap, has spoken fondly of Jean following her death. “She could make you laugh, particularly with Hilda’s comedy singing, but she could also deliver incredibly moving performances and make you cry. She was a wonderful actress”.
The actress has also been complimented by her co-workers on her wonderful personality. Michael Le Vell, who plays Kevin Webster, has said, “For such an iconic character she was always one of the first people to make a new arrival feel so welcome”.
Roache and Le Vell are just two of an overwhelming number of actors and actresses, to release statements of pure admiration for Jean.
It’s undoubted that her memory will live on for many years to come, both in the soap world and beyond.
