Dutch architect to design groundbreaking Manchester arts centre

Remember when TNT covered the story about Manchester’s new £110m arts centre ‘The Factory’ at the Old Granada Studios? Well here’s an update.

Dutch Architect Rem Koolhaas has won the internationally ran competition to design The Factory, Manchester’s cutting-edge arts venue. The venture will see Office for Metropolitan Architecture erect its first building in the UK. The factory will form part of the new St John’s neighbourhood, which is being developed by Allied London in partnership with Manchester City Council.

The council has said that The Factory will be a new type of large-scale venue, which will capture the extraordinary creative vision and depth of Manchester’s cultural life.

A spokesperson for the council also added “The importance of the factory cannot be overstated. It will be of international significance, the cultural anchor for the next phase of economic and cultural regeneration in Manchester. Whilst OMA’s founder, Mr. Koolhaas, has remarked, “I look forward to realising this radical arts building for Manchester. It is wonderful to participate in the longstanding renaissance of the city”.
