For the past 15 years, Hands on Hair (HOH), has been throwing what some may call ‘a children’s Easter party-in-the-park’. This Easter Sunday, HOH held its annual Easter Egg Hunt (EEH) at Alexandra Park, Whalley Range, like never before.
Following the growing success of the event in previous years, HOH decided to join forces with TNT for the third year running, to make the EEH a community occasion.
This year, EEH had a surprise guest in the name of ‘Katie’…Storm Katie, to be precise. The storm which brought destructive winds, heavy rain and a hailstorm across the country over the Easter break, did pass through Alexandra Park but didn’t stop the organisers of the EEH at the park.
Periodically alternating from sunshine, rain and hail, the weather was ineffectual to the day’s itinerary and cause. Volunteers scurried to help set-up the gazebo, tables with gifts and confectionaries and begin the parent and child registration.
Prior to the gates being open at 12pm, eggs and sweet treats were hidden away amongst the bushes, flowers and trees. The children – over 200 on the day – had to essentially be like bunnies in the park – hunting for treats to munch on.
As the Egg hunting kicked off, parents cheered on their little ones, from toddlers to 6-14 year-olds. Face painting was available for all children, with games including piñata and 100metre sprint racing keeping the partying spirit when going between the rainy spells.
In the gazebo, was plenty of cakes, drinks and tombola – all eventually converged there for the treats and to hide from the rain outside the canopy.
Hands On Hair thanked its sponsors and all who helped make a success of the much loved Easter event. The EEH main sponsor was MG Waste Management and local sponsors included: Chicken Run, City South Manchester Housing Trust, Moss Care Housing, Bargain World (Whalley Range), Costcutter (Hart Road), Fallowfield Superstore (Lloyd Street), Morrison’s (Chorlton), Tesco (Whalley Range), Tesco (Firswood), The Co-operative (Whalley Range) and Malik Superstore (Withington Road).
