Erykah Badu’s R&B mix tape is largely a remix of other artists’ tracks, with a self-referencing title to her ‘Tyrone’ single from 2007. Badu’s last album, ‘New Amerykah Part Two’ was released in 2010 but the underrated artist has not been laying low.
Badu has since been featuring on numerous tracks including, Janelle Monae’s single Q.U.E.E.N. She also released a remix to Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’ in October, and on Sunday – while hosting the 2015 Soul Train Awards – Badu was happy to poke fun at herself and Iggy Azalea careers.
During her opening monologue, the 44-year-old singer mocked that she was the queen of neo soul “I have this common effect on rappers: that I make them change gods and wear crochet hats, shoulder pads” said Badu.
“So they have banned me from all of the hip-hop awards with a sign saying ‘Erykah Badu, leave our rappers alone’“. Badu then pretended to take a phone call from Azalea. “Who is this? Iggy Azalea? Yeah, hey! No! You can come,” she stated. “‘Cause what you’re doing is definitely not rap.”
