Focusing First on People (FFOP) is an organisation set up by Abdi Yusuf. An active member of the local community in and around south and central Manchester. The organisation provides much needed help to get people back into work.
Mr Yusuf explains that the organisation will help anyone ‘who would like to embrace the opportunity to raise their employability or skills for personal and career development.’
FFOP specialises in helping people who for various reasons might not have had their needs met by the mainstream services. Focusing First on People are able to offer tailor made support that caters to the needs of the individual.
Set up in 2004, Focusing First on People is now an established organisation based in the heart of Moss Side. The organisation is committed to working with people over the age of 16 from the whole of the Greater Manchester area.
FFOP has established links with colleges across Manchester and into Salford and Bury. The head office that deals with enquiries is to be found on Claremont road in Moss Side.
Having established a strong presence in the community. Mr Yusuf and his organisation now work in conjunction with Manchester City Council and Job Centre Plus. Both organisations refer clients to FFOP, Job Centre Plus signposts people to the organisation for the work club. People can join workshops for CV writing and interview skills, and job searches free of charge.
The work club is based in the heart of the community on 169 Princess Road and is open to the over 16’s . In order to benefit from the opportunities the work club provides you are asked to sign up at Focusing First on People’s offices based at 97 Claremont Road.
Mr Yusuf regards community organisations such as his as being vital to the personal progression of local people.
Abdi says that without such services people can feel isolated. To avoid such isolation FFOP offer a mentoring service for new business start-ups, providing that extra support many people need in the early days. They also give practical help to people wanting to start new businesses, for example with finding funding, premises and training.
The organisation also offers in-house security training in CCTV monitoring and door supervision.
