On Friday 12 February Premier League club Sunderland sacked Adam Johnson, after the former England footballer pleaded guilty to two child sex offences.
Johnson pleaded guilty to one charge of grooming and one charge of sexual activity with a child, however he also denies a further two charges of sexual activity with the same girl.
The 28-year-old, who has 12 England caps, has been accused of having sexual activity with a girl that was 15 at the time. The girl described how the winger was her favourite player, she revealed, “I got a message from Sunderland player Adam Johnson who I’d idolised for quite a while”.
In the trial the victim said that after exchanging a series of messages she first met up with him on 17 January 2015, when he signed two Sunderland shirts for her. She also said that the footballer continued to message her, requesting a “thank you kiss”.
She told police “I was well up for it. It was a surreal type of thing. I met up with him again. I gave him his thank you kiss and more”. Mr. Johnson sat in the dock watching the girl deliver her account on two large video screens.
The court heard her describe how Mr. Johnson exchanged WhatsApp messages with her after their first meeting, before saying “you owe me for this”.
The victim claimed that at the second meeting, which took place in Johnson’s Range Rover, he said to her “I’ve come for my thank you kiss”. The girl then revealed “I was kissing him for quite a while”.
She also went on to add, “He undid the buttons on my trousers. It took him quite a while to do that” before describing sexual activity between the pair. The victim insisted that the sex act happened for three or four seconds on 30 January 2015, and that she was disappointed in herself.
Johnson’s shock admission to two counts of child sex offences was not enough to make girlfriend Stacey Flounders leave him. His girlfriend has openly admitted that she is not considering leaving him, and she believes that he can be a solid supporter of their infant child.
Speaking on behalf of the prosecution Kate Blackwell QC said that the alleged incidents had taken place in County Durham, in or about the area of Castle Eden and Wingate.
