Harvey Weinstein charged with rape

Harvey Weinstein has turned himself into police, on charges that he raped one woman and forced another to perform oral sex on him.

And CNN reports the 66-year-old has been charged with rape in the first and third degree in one case, and first-degree sex act in another.

The news comes after it was reported one accuser, Lucia Evans, had come forward and told officials the disgraced producer forced her to perform oral sex on him in 2004.

The former Mirimax boss is also under investigation for alleged sex crimes in London and LA, following a string of women coming forward with allegations last year.

The New York Times states he has negotiated a bail package in advance – which includes surrendering his passport and wearing a monitoring device.

He has previously denied all accusations of sexual assault. His lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, previously explained: ‘Mr. Weinstein has always maintained that he has never engaged in nonconsensual sexual acts.’

Accusations against the mogul sparked the #MeToo movement at the end of last year, with many more women around the world coming forward with their own stories of abuse against powerful men in the public eye.

Rose McGowan, one of the first to publicly accuse Weinstein of assault, released a statement which read: ‘I, and so many of Harvey Weinstein’s survivors, had given up hope that our rapist would be held accountable by law.

‘Twenty years ago, I swore that I would right this wrong. Today we are one step closer to justice.

‘We were young women who were assaulted by Weinstein and later terrorised by his vast network of complicity. I stand with my fellow survivors.

‘May this give hope to all victims and survivors everywhere that are telling their truths,’ she added to Hollywood Reporter.
