In response to claims that she appropriates black culture, the X Factor contestant who goes by the name of Honey G, has not only denied these statements – but compared herself to Jay Z and Pharrell.
In recent weeks, the rapper faced harsh criticism and was branded as a ‘novelty act’ and a ‘racist caricature’ on the show. Whilst she entertained part of the nation, her Saturday night performances have sparked outrage amongst many viewers.
One offended viewer wrote: “Honey G’s performance on X Factor was the rape of black culture. All jokes aside, cultural appropriation actually upset me on Saturday night”.
The 35-year-old from Harrow is described, by fans, to be serious rapper with an unusual technique. However, her act has also read as a potentially problematic parody of hip-hop culture.
Honey G has responded to the criticism stating: “Any claims about me being racist are completely false and ridiculous. I’ve been heavily influenced by rap and hip-hop culture and involved in it for a number of years.
“I’m the finished article and I’m no different to the likes of Pharrell or Jay Z”.
