On the weekend commencing 18 March, a casual outing rapidly turned in to a murder mystery for two hikers as they discovered a “very old” human skull, close to the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles.
The hikers made the discovery on Saturday afternoon whilst taking a detour within a remote section of the Bronson Canyon trail in Griffith Park. Authorities believe that the skull, which was found 400 feet from the iconic sign, had been there for years. Reportedly, the hikers discovered the top of the skull to the nose.
Shortly after 3pm on Saturday the coroners office was summoned to analyse the deceased’s age and gender. Parts of the park were closed on Saturday in order for authorities to undertake their investigation.
This is not the first time that skeletal remains have been discovered in this area of the park as 66-year-old Hervey Medellin’s head, hand and feet were found nearby in 2012.
That finding later let to a homicide arrest being made. Hervey’s househusband boyfriend, 38-year-old Gabriel Campos-Martinez, was convicted of his murder last October and is currently serving 25 years to life in prison.
