Idris Elba not ‘English’ enough-watch

The Idris Elba-Bond saga continues. Now former Bond actor, Sir Roger Moore has come under criticism for stating Idris Elba cannot play the 007 role because “He is not English English”.

Sir Roger denies accusations of racism, over the comments he is thought to have made in a French magazine interview about the prospect of Idris Elba playing James Bond in the future.

Having starred in seven ‘James Bond’ films, Sir Roger has suggested that it would be “unrealistic” for Idris to take on the part when Daniel Craig steps down from the role.

The 87-year old actor was quoted by Paris Match saying: “A few years ago, I said that Cuba Gooding Jnr would make an excellent Bond, but it was a joke!” Sir Roger reportedly continued, “Although James may have been played by a Scot, a Welshman and an Irishman, I think he should be ‘English-English’. Nevertheless, it’s an interesting idea, but unrealistic.

Naturally, the comments caused a Twitter storm of protest against the veteran actor, with many calling his comments ‘racist’. Both Sir Roger and Idris Elba were trending over the weekend with users – including celebrities – rubbishing the former Bond’s comments.

Retired, undisputed world heavyweight boxing champion, Lennox Lewis said, “Christian Bale can play a REAL Pharaoh, but @idriselba [Idris Elba] can’t play a FICTIONAL James Bond? #RogerMoore”

“Love @sirrogermoore [Sir Roger] & he’s not a racist. He’s wrong though – @idriselba [Idris Elba] would make a brilliant James Bond”, British journalist Piers Morgan commented on the saga.

With the social media outrage reaching Sir Roger, he immediately took to Twitter saying “An interview I gave to Paris Match implies I said something racist about Idris Elba. That is simply untrue. #Lost in translation”.

The rumours about Elba replacing the current Bond, Daniel Craig – who also backs Elba for the role – have been circulating for a while. In December 2014, the 42-year old, Hackney-born actor posted a selfie on Twitter with the words, “007 is supposed to be handsome? Glad you think I’ve got a shot!” to his 1.39million followers.

Curiously however, The Wire and Luther star has so far remained silent on Moore’s comments.
