Malala Yousafzai has joined Twitter after finishing high school to urge others to fight for girls’ education. Yousafzai waited until finishing her high school exams before joining social media.
The Pakistani teenager made headlines in 2012 after surviving being shot in the head by Taliban gunmen. When she was just 15 she was targeted after speaking up for the right for girls to be educated.
Malala was then flown to a UK hospital for urgent treatment to save her life. After her recovery she moved to and attended a high school in Birmingham.
Malia’s campaigning has seen her address the UN General Assembly in 2013 and be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize a year later.
The 19-year-old campaigns for the rights of girls around the world and vowed to continue the fight with her first tweets.
After receiving a warm welcome to Twitter, it prompted her to Tweet:
“Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome. I’m still reading all your replies and it may take awhile. Glad I joined AFTER exams.”
Since joining Twitter, the activist has amassed over six hundred thousand followers.
