British journalist and self-confessed internet villain, Milo Yiannopoulos, has been permanently banned from Twitter, as of the evening of 19 July 2016.
The ban is supposedly linked to the abuse that actress Leslie Jones has recently received, via the social media platform.
Following her appearance in the recently released film, ‘Ghostbusters’, Leslie has been the victim of a large number of derogatory comments. Some of which – that she shared on Twitter to expose the trolls – were racist comments.
@Dr000ne tweeted, “I know you only wanted to protect that kid @Lesdoggg”, with a picture of a gorilla stood behind a child.
Milo Yiannopoulos has been linked to the online bullying of the actress, since he wrote an extremely negative review of the film, plus taking to Twitter to share his thoughts on Leslie.
A spokesperson of Twitter has since stressed that a number of actions are being taken, in order to both punish the trolls involved in this situation, and to prevent similar misconduct from occurring in the future.
Milo has a huge fan base though, full of tweeters desperate for his ban to be lifted. The hashtag, “FreeMilo”, is currently trending.
Twitter must now decide what action to take following the uproar of fans, who believe that the ban shows that the platform does not allow freedom of speech.
