Liverpool shows how to beat Manchester City

Manchester City’s dream of going the Premier League season undefeated is over after they were beaten 4-3 by Liverpool. Liverpool showed the football world how to beat Manchester City. The key to this, it seemed, was in running at John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi, Man City’s central defenders.

Pep Guardiola’s men had gone 22 matches this term without a loss. The match at Anfield was arguably Man City’s biggest test remaining en route to remain unbeaten all season.

Man City couldn’t pass the test – thanks to Liverpool’s stunning display.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring in the 9th minute, however Leroy Sane equalised before half-time.

Roberto Firmino restored Liverpool’s lead in the 59th minute when he curled the ball beyond Ederson into the far corner.

Sadio Mane made it 3-1 after Liverpool stole possession deep in Man City’s half. His unstoppable shot nearly ripped the roof off the net. Liverpool were then in dream land when Ederson’s poor clearance was seized on by Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian then lobbed the Man City keeper from long range.

Man City substitute Bernardo Silva pulled one goal back for the visitors, threatening an incredible comeback. It didn’t appear likely to materialise but then Ilkay Gundogan stabbed in from close range as the game went into injury time.

It set up an incredibly tense final couple of minutes and Sergio Aguero went incredibly close but headed just wide at the death and was offside.

The defeat for Man City was their first in the Premier League since April 2017 when they lost to Chelsea. As a result, they had gone undefeated for 30 games run.

Arsenal’s achievement of being the only side to have gone an entire Premier League season unbeaten – completed in 2003/04 – remains intact.
