International Association of Athletics Federation president Lord Coe faces conflict of interest allegations, after an email suggesting that he lobbied his predecessor over the hosting of the 2021 World Championships has emerged.
Eugene in Oregon, USA, was awarded the event without a biding process, despite intense interest from the Swedish city of Gothenburg. An investigation has led to the discovery of emails that claim Coe, an ambassador for Nike and the then vice president of world athletics, “reached out” to Lamine Diack in his support for Eugene’s bid.
Eugene lost out to Doha in with a bid for the 2019 Games and is closely associated with Nike, with its expansive Nike Oregon Project. When questioned about the allegations Coe stated that he “did not lobby anyone”, he also claims that he “encouraged them to re-enter another bidding cycle because they had a strong bid”. The former 1500m Olympic champion maintains that all the bids for the Championships are “a matter of public record”.
