A 1950 painting of a father and his two sons by L.S Lowry has sold for a gigantic £1.7m at an auction in London. The sale has set the new record for an amount paid for one of the Manchester artists’ portraits.
Described as a “timeless glimpse into street life”, the portrait had been tipped to fetch between £1.5m and £2.5m. However it is not the most expensive piece of Lowry’s work to date, as his 1949 landscape ‘The Football Match’ sold for £5.6m in 2011.
