Fury vs Parker at Manchester Arena
The Manchester Arena host Hughie Fury’s fight against Joseph Parker for the WBO heavyweight title on 23 Septemeber.
This fight may not have seemed realistic two years ago. Both men’s fate has been shaped by the actions of Fury’s cousin, Tyson. The vacuum created by Tyson’s fall from grace gave Parker the chance to grasp the WBO title. Almost year later, Hughie has the opportunity to snatch it back for his family.
Parker arrives in Manchester with more questions than answers while Fury’s credentials are equally camouflaged.
It’s the questions that make fights and this one has plenty to answer.
Is Parker the real deal? Is Fury anything like his cousin? The answers will be revealed on Saturday.
It may be a heavyweight world title, but few are sure about either fighter. We should be hailing each man for their elite abilities and past triumphs. However, this bout’s narrative is dominated by ifs, buts and maybes.
Both are weighed down by a questionable slew of opponents, their unbeaten records still wear the cloak of an untested prodigy. It’s impossible to measure how good or over-hyped either is.
Fury will enter the ring just shy of 17 months since his previous bout while Parker fought last May.
Ring rust may be a cliche, but it is something to consider when a fighter is heading into a world title clash.
