Manchester City face Sunderland at The Stadium of Light tonight in the third round of The Capital One Cup, will Manuel Pellegrini field a youthful team or will the likes of Sergio Aguero and Yaya Touré feature?
City will be eager to rectify their poor performance against West Ham United, which resulted in their first defeat of the Premier League season. Yaya Touré was blunted throughout City’s last match although the Ivorian is expected to start tonight. Touré’s belligerent presence and range of passing will be crucial in the centre of midfield if City are to amend their recent form. A glimmer of light emerged from City’s last match as Kevin De Bruyne scored a goal whilst making his home debut for the sky blues.
Will city’s new £54.5m signing start tonight’s match, or will David Silva occupy the central attacking midfield position yet again? Silva has been struggling with a calf injury from the weekend however he is expected to be available for selection. The Spaniard has played every minute of City’s fixtures this season consequently Pellegrini could decide to rest him.
Although Sunderland have been woeful in the Premier League, Dick Advocaat’s team will be aware of the novelty of the cup tie and could pose some serious questions. Eliaquim Mangala and his centre-back partner will have to monitor the sharp movement of Jermaine Defoe if they are to prevent the striker from displaying his clinical finishing.
Jeremain Lens will provide Sunderland with much needed width and the Dutchman undoubtedly possesses the potential to trouble Aleksandar Kolarov, if the left back attacks without consideration.
