Manchester mourns community champion Deyika Nzeribe

Green Party mayoral candidate for Manchester, Deyika Nzeribe, has died aged 50.

The much-loved campaigner and activist had rushed to the Accident and Emergency (A&E) department in hospital after contracting flu, according to close friend Colette Williams.

After a couple of hours in hospital, the father-of-three passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Known locally as a ‘community champion’, the late Green Mayor candidate was a resident of Hulme in Manchester. He was involved in numerous campaigns and activities advocating for local services and community engagement.

Also a member of BARAC, Mr Nzeribe had extensive networks within the voluntary and arts sectors. His networks branched far and wide with national black activists and the Manchester Environmental Education Network.

‘His legacy will be our continuing fight’

On his Facebook account, the words “Deyika Nzeribe 1966 – 2017”, garnered hundreds of tributes in the comments section. A vigil celebrating Mr Nzeribe’s life was held outside Hulme’s Z-Arts Centre on the evening of 2 January.

Friends and local figures took to social media to share their shock and tributes.

Novelist and Manchester Muslim Writers’ Zahid Hussain praised his late friend’s work and character. “If you’d met him then you’d never forget him. If you never had the chance, then know that he was an untiring community champion who deserved many honours”.

“So very very sad to hear of the death of Deyika Nzeribe”, Manchester poet and activist Steph Pike said. “He was a wonderful man, an inspiration and the most committed activist. He will be missed so much by so many people. His legacy will be our continuing fight for a better world”, she added.

“A kind gentle spirit, who has been such a support over the years to so many. He is going to leave a huge hole in many people’s hearts”, local writer Aisha Mirza said. Acknowledging his extensive positive influence, Mirza said he will leave “a massive hole in the heart of Manchester”.

Funeral arrangements for Mr Nzeribe will soon be announced, as more updates are released here.
