Manchester’s giant Town Hall Santa is back

Manchester’s giant Santa is set to return to his rightful place on top of the Town Hall – ready for the big Christmas lights switch – on Friday 4 November.

Since he first took his position by the Christmas Markets in 2007, giant Santa has become somewhat of a Christmas mascot for the city. Each year he is used as the image of Christmas in Manchester and it just wouldn’t be the same without him anymore.

Not one to be behind with the times, giant Santa even has his own Twitter account.

His account is called @MCRSanta and his tweets are already in full swing. On 31 October he tweeted, “Sitting pretty on my comfy festive perch – come say ‘ho ho hello’ if you’re nearby”.

Manchester’s Christmas spokesperson, Councillor Pat Karney has said:

However, you know him – Zippy or otherwise! – he’s become a real icon of our festive celebrations and a favourite of the millions of people who visit the city during the Christmas Markets.

Despite already being sat in place, giant Santa won’t be lighting up Manchester until Friday’s switch-on.
