The grandson of the late Nelson Mandela has appeared in court, accused of raping a 15 year old girl in a restaurant bathroom.
A leading London black newspaper has identified the suspect but due to South African laws regarding sexual assault, the suspect’s name has been withheld in compliance with the Sexual Offences and Related Matters Act of 2007.
The suspect appeared briefly at Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday (Aug 17) where he was remanded in custody at Johannesburg prison despite calls from his defence that he remain at Parkview police station’s holding cells.
Brigadier Mashadi Selepe of Guateng Police informed the South African Independent Online that “At this stage, the matter has been taken for judicial determination, and the National Prosecuting Authority will comment further. The investigation by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit continues.”
Allegedly the rape took place whilst the victim was dining with friends at the Greenside restaurant in Johannesburg, in the premise’s bathroom.
Amidst to South African reports, it has also emerged that another member of the iconic Mandela family has been accused of attempting to silence and intimidate the victim and her family.
The family claim that a bodyguard was sent to their home, posing as a police officer insisting that there was no need to make a police report.
The suspect is expected to appear in court this Friday to apply for bail.
