Otherwise known as the ‘freeze’ challenge
Every so often online, there is a challenge that spins the globe in a frenzy. We had the Ice Bucket challenge, the Whip/Nae Nae dance, the Running Man Challenge and many others. Although these challenges are sensational when they arrive, we have to accept the very fact that they are fleeting. Currently, we have the Mannequin Challenge, which Manchester’s TNT team took part in recently.
It’s not an overstatement to say ‘everyone is doing it’. Even Beyonce and her girls from the Destiny’s Child have done it. The premise is simple. People stand still whilst being filmed. To be precise, each clip consists of people remaining completely motionless for about a minute as the camera winds its way through the area. This also happens as Rae Sremmurd’s “Black Beatles” serves as a musical backdrop.
The result looks as if someone paused a movie, as people look like mannequins placed in various positions. Among these poses you’ll find people talking on the phone stopped mid-sentence. There are also people with a water bottle inches away from their lips as they get ready to take a sip. People are caught midway through laughter. The possibilities in this challenge are truly endless for these frozen positions, leaving a lot of room for creativity.
The question on most people’s lips is ‘Where did it all begin and why is the craze here now?’ The answer is less clear. The song used in the videos isn’t new.
According to Twitter’s history, it all started with a video from Twitter user @pvrity___ where a group of high school friends from Edward H. White High School in Jacksonville, Fla., created the first video.
Since then, our Internet community helped it spread. From local football teams to cheer squads to groups of friends, and even Hillary Clinton and her staff during the US Election campaign. There are plenty to watch if you need a distraction, including The Nubian Times’ very own.
