Rihanna and Beyoncé may have been amongst the last to have turned up at the Met Gala last night but their outrageous outfits definitely stole the show. The pair, along with many other A-listers, turned up at the China: Through the Looking Glass-themed Met Ball in New York in dazzling fashion.
Formerly known as the Costume Institute Gala, the Met Gala is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City.
The event marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. Each year’s event celebrates the theme of that year’s exhibition and the show sets the tone for the formal dress of the night since guests are expected to choose their fashion to match the theme of the exhibit.
There were also a number of Chinese celebrities in attendance; perhaps chief among them was actress Gong Li. Celebrated film director Wong Kar Wai turned up as the Met exhibit’s artistic director.
After the event, the exhibition goes on for several months. The 2014 exhibition was scheduled to run from 8 May until 10 August. The Gala is widely considered as one of the most exclusive social events in New York and one of the biggest fundraising nights in the city, with 9 million dollars raised in 2013 and a record of $12 million the following year.
