Blue Monday is deemed as the most depressing day of the year, and this year it fell on 16 January. Due to weather conditions, debt levels and time since failing New Year’s resolutions, Blue Monday looked as gloomy as ever.
That was until Darren, the tram driver, went to work that morning.
In spite of the supposed Monday blues, Metrolink passengers were greeted with “chirpy” tannoy announcements that brought smiles all round.
Driving the Bury – Altrincham line, dozens of commuters took to social media to praise his efforts to entertain his passengers.
According to Twitter users, he announced; “If you don’t want to talk to fellow commuters, move to London. This is Manchester. We are nice”.
Eimear Strong said the happy driver announced: “Today’s Blue Monday but not on this tram”. He also greeted everyone who got on the tram and announced each stop along the journey.
Others described him as a “credit to the company”. Passenger Tony Hassall said: “Thanks for cheery driver Darren this morning! Great station updates and blue Monday mood-lifts”.
Vicky added on Twitter: “Darren the driver on the Altrincham-Bury tram this morning is hilarious. Good to have some personality on a Monday morning”.
