This is a ‘richly imagined’ novel which is set in the Hawai’i of over a century ago.

The tale is set in a time and place of which, little is known. Rachel Kalama is a ‘spirited’ seven-year-old Hawaiian girl who dreams of visiting far-away lands like her father.

Rachel’s dreams are shattered when a rose-coloured mark appears on her skin. Rachel is taken from her home and separated from her family and is sent to Kalaupapa. Kalaupapa is the leprosy settlement on the island of Moloka’i.

Rachel thinks she is dying but her life is just beginning.
