Muslim US Olympic poster girl feels ‘unsafe’ in her country

One of the USA’s Olympic team has made the news recently, due to being the first US athlete to compete in a hijab.

Ibtihaj Muhammad went to Rio to compete in fencing, and was thought to be doing what every other athlete does, representing her country with pride.

However, it has now come to light that this is not the case for Ibtihaj.

In an interview, she has spoken extremely negatively of America, stating that she is made to feel constantly unsafe there.

She went on to say, “I had someone follow me home from practice and try to report me to police. And this is right on 28th and 7th in New York City.”

Ibtihaj came second in the vote for who would carry the US flag at the Olympic opening ceremony, missing out to swimmer Michael Phelps.

Since speaking out about her feelings towards the country, she has faced criticism for being in the runnings to lead the US into the Rio arena.

Despite now having been knocked out of her event, the athlete is reportedly continuing to speak out about the issues she has faced; in regards to being a hijab-wearer in the US Olympic team.

Regardless of the problems she has encountered thus far, Ibtihaj still ploughed through them to represent her country.
