Monday 7 March, between 11.30am and 1.30pm, will mark the official opening of Manchester’s new National Taekwondo Centre (NTC), home to GB Taekwondo. Both City Council and GB Taekwondo have given an open invitation to the ceremony at Ten Acres Sports Complex on Ten Acres Lane, Manchester.
The opening follows of a near £3m transformation of the Ten Acres Lane training facility in Newton Heath. Although guests are advised to arrive for 11.30am, the formal opening ceremony will take place at noon, with the chance to tour the facility offered from 12:30pm.
Expected at the ceremony will be the President of the World Taekwondo Federation, Chungwon Choue. There will also be special appearances from London 2012 Olympic Champion, Jade Jones and 2015 World Heavyweight Champion, Biance Walkden.
Additional figures to appear at the ceremony include, the overall 2015 WTF World Grand Prix Series Champion, Lutalo Muhammad, as well as representatives of stakeholders in Sport England, UK Sport, Manchester City Council and Eastlands Trust.
Manchester has been home to GB Taekwondo since 2007. Now, for the first time, athletes, coaches and administrators will all be able to work together in the same building.
Team GB fighters captured two medals at London 2012 and have qualified for four weight divisions for Rio 2016. The opening of the new facility, with its 900 square metre training hall and 500 square metre state-of-the-art strength and conditioning hall, couldn’t be better timed.
In March, GB Taekwondo athletes return to major competition, starting with the Dutch Open, as the build-up to this summer’s Olympics continues.
