A black woman is to become the chief executive of Ofcom.
Senior Treasury official Sharon White takes up the post in March. She will be the first black woman to lead the media industry regulator.
Ms White takes over from Ed Richards. Richards was chief executive for seven years of the 11 he spent with Ofcom.
With 25 years worth of experience in the government and public sector, White will now be paid £275,000 a year for the leadership role at the UK regulator.
One of her first major tasks will be to assess the proposed closure of BBC3.
“The communications sector is vital to the economy and delivers essential services to everyone in the UK. I look forward to starting in this fascinating job and building on Ofcom’s considerable track record.” said White.
