According to reports Nicole Scherzinger will star in a TV remake of the classic movie ‘Dirty Dancing’.
The singer, actress and former X Factor judge has been cast as Penny – the role was originally played by Cynthia Rhodes in the 1987 film – who is the dance partner of lead character Johnny Castle.
Scherzinger will join a cast that already includes Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin, dancer/actor Colt Prattes and Will and Grace’s Debra Messing. The three-hour remake, which will be directed by The Sapphires director Wayne Blair and shown on ABC, is yet to set a transmission date.
Scherzinger has previously guest starred in ‘How I met Your Mother’ and ‘Wizards of Waverley Place’. On stage she has appeared in ‘Rent’ at the Hollywood Bowl and thoroughly impressed in the 2014 London revival of ‘Cats’, where she played Grizabella.
Set in the summer of 1963, ‘Dirty Dancing’ is the song and dance love story about 17-year-old Baby who falls for her working-class instructor Johhny Castle. Eleanor Bergstein, who wrote the screenplay for the original movie and who was also behind the successful ‘Dirty Dancing’ musical, is on board for the small screen adaptation.
The adaptation is to be produced by Lionsgate TV. In 2011 Lionsgate announced plans to remake the film for the big screen with Kenny Ortega, who choreographed the original, at the helm.
