OJ Simpson free
Ex-American football legend OJ Simpson was freed yesterday after serving nine years for a botched hotel room heist.
Simpson was released and collected by a car just after midnight from Lovelock Correctional Center in northern Nevada. Officials said the timing was to avoid media attention.
The man known as ‘The Juice’ in his NFL days was controversially acquitted for the killings of his ex-wife and her friend in 1995 in Los Angeles.
Tom Scotto, a close friend who lives in Florida, claimed he was with Simpson following his release.
Simpson said he wanted to move back to Florida. It is the place where he lived before his armed robbery conviction in a September 2007 confrontation with two sports memorabilia dealers in Las Vegas. But Florida prison officials said documents had not been filed. They also stated the state attorney general said she doesn’t want Simpson to live in the state.
The 70-year-old gained his freedom after a July parole hearing. In it he said the 2007 robbery was an error of judgment he would not repeat.
He served only nine years of a 33-year sentence. Now, the ex-movie star and TV personality will have up to five years of parole supervision. Simpson was looking forward to reuniting with his family, eating a steak and seafood, his lawyer, Malcolm LaVergne said.
Simpson was arrested over the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman after a famous chase on California freeways. His subsequent trial became a live TV sensation.
Two years after he was cleared, Simpson was found liable in civil court for the killings. He was ordered to pay $33.5million (£25.2m) to surviving relatives.
A Goldman family lawyer says he is still on the hook for the judgment, which now amounts to about $65million (£48million).
