Former One Direction member Zayn Malik recently released his first solo single since splitting from the group, and the track has soared straight to No.1 in the UK singles chart. The song is also the fastest selling of the year, so far.
‘Pillowtalk’ hit the top spot with combined sales of 112,000 and 4.97 million streams, according to the Official Charts Company.
The song diverges from the pop music Malik made with his former band mates, whilst including expletives and racy scenes with his model girlfriend Gigi Hadid.
Malik fended off competition from Jonas Blue’s ‘Fast Car’ which is at No.2 this week and ‘Stitches’ by Shawn Mendes, which was last week’s No.1.
‘Pillowtalk’ is the first single from Malik’s debut album, which is to be released in March. The fact that Malik’s new single has reached No.1 may surprise some, especially when they learn that he pulled out of a number of promotional interviews.
Meanwhile, Davie Bowie continues to dominate the albums chart and has claimed the No.1 spot for a fourth week, but with a different album.
Craig David entered the top 10 singles chart for the first time since his 2007 record ‘Hot Stuff’ (Lets Dance) as his new hit ‘When the Bassline Drops’ moved in to seventh position, 10 weeks after it was first released.
Rihanna’s ‘Work’ leaped from No.13 to No.4 whilst Justin Bieber has finally relinquished his grasp on the singles chart. The Canadian now just has ‘Love Yourself’ at No.5.
