The Oscars was almost pronounced #SoWhite in a mix-up which wrongly awarded Best Picture to La La Land.
The biggest mix-up in the history of the Oscars took place at the 2017 award ceremony. This mix-up occurred during the highly anticipated final announcement – which awarded the Best Picture.
Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway took to the stage to announce the overall winner. Many thought Beatty was putting on a humorous performance of his own as he opened the envelope.
Beatty appeared to be confused, shaking the envelope and looking for another card as the audience laughed. Faye then read the card, announcing La La Land as Best Picture.
The cast and crew of La La Land took to the stage to celebrate their win. Jordan Horowitz delivered his acceptance speech, oblivious to the big mistake. An Oscar official then took to the stage, informing the La La Land crew of the blunder.
Horowitz then informed the audience. He said, “Guys, I’m sorry, no, there’s a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won best picture”.
“This is not a joke, Moonlight has won best picture”, Horowitz said. He then held the card up, showing the audience that Moonlight had won.
The embarrassing mix-up occurred as Beatty was reportedly given the wrong card. The shocked Moonlight cast then took to the stage to celebrate. This is a major achievement for the poetic independent film and their all-black cast.
As it appears, the Oscars are opening up the doors to welcome diversity. Actress Viola Davis took the award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Fences. Actor Mahershala Ali took the award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Moonlight.
Moonlight also took home another award for Adapted Screenplay. The highest grossing, Best Picture Oscar nominee, Hidden Figures surprisingly went home empty handed.
Cassey Affleck was awarded Actor in a Leading Role for Manchester by the Sea. La La Land’s Emma Stone was awarded Actress in a Leading Role.
Critics have cited that Hollywood’s bias in its relentless promotion of La La Land is telling of its stance in the diversity row. Whilst La La Land was getting all the promotion across the media, Hidden Figures managed to gross higher than La La Land at the box office.
The Oscars 2017 however was not #SoWhite but more must be done to celebrate diversity.
