Whose imposing form defines us so well?
Through decades, generations, trends and events,
In war-time and peace-time,
In poverty and in wealth.
What will they do to the Whalley Hotel
Whose only fault was surviving; living to tell?
To be constant and faithful to the structure it held
While planners and designers forced the landscape to bend.
It carves out the doorstep from Whalley Range to Old Trafford
While linking Moss Side and Hulme with its neighbours.
This corner, this meeting place for disputers and for comrades,
For festivals and funerals, for memories long forgotten.
What will become of the Whalley Hotel?
I should hope in the future it will live again
To keep together the present and the past
And help Post-Code 16’s
Know who they really are.
