There is no denying that although Manchester United will almost inevitably finish fourth – especially if Arsenal beat Sunderland this Wednesday. United’s manager Louis Van Gaal declared that it was “unbelievable” that the fans applauded his team during the squad’s lap of appreciation on Sunday at Old Trafford.
In his view, Van Gaal appreciates how the fans overlook the fact that this club has improved on last season’s seventh position finish. Having drawn 1-1 to Arsenal yesterday, United are now also left unsure whether who many call their ‘saviour’ – Goalkeeper David De Gea – will stay or leave the club. The Spaniard is considering a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid and Van Gaal said the 24-year old faces a tough decision this summer as he has “to choose between two big clubs”.
On another note, United defender Phil Jones proved his commitment to the club as he made a much-publicised brave tackle with his face. Having lost his footing and with Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud threatening to steal the ball, Jones scrambles along the floor before getting a touch on the ball with his head and then falls on his face to the ground. We feel for him for any injuries incurred from this fall; not so much the physical injuries but those incurred from social media’s memes.
At Anfield, Liverpool failed to give Steven Gerrard a victorious farewell to as Crystal Palace emerged worthy winners on an emotional occasion .Gerrard was making his final appearance at Anfield, before making his move to Major League Soccer with LA Galaxy. Liverpool supporters gathered at the stadium hours before kick-off to pay tribute to their iconic captain.
The game itself illustrated just how much work needs to be done by manager Brendan Rodgers, as Palace pushed Liverpool to the side on their way to a 3-1 win.
On a gloomier note QPR and Burnley have been relegated having lost and drawn in Saturday’s fixtures. The fight to beat the drop is now down to three teams: Sunderland, Newcastle and Hull. With only three points separating them, the final week of the Premier League is sure to reach a dramatic and emotional conclusion.
