New Manchester United signing Fred has paid tribute to the fans who played a key role in his decision to join the Premier League giants.
The Brazil international completed a medical with the club a fortnight ago and signed a five-year deal with the option of an extra 12 months.
United officially confirmed the deal on 21 June, making Fred their second signing of the summer following the arrival of Diogo Dalot from Porto for £19m.
Fred was close to joining Manchester City in January, but the move broke down and the 25-year-old paid tribute to the United fans who had been encouraging him to join their club.
‘I want to thank all of the Manchester United fans, even now, just as I am signing,’ he told Manchester United’s official website.
‘So many of them reached out to me and asked me to join the club and that really meant a lot to me.
‘All I can say in return is that I’m going to run my hardest and work my hardest to make history for the club and the fans.’
The midfielder says he couldn’t reject the chance to work for Mourinho.
‘This is the biggest club in the world and I am delighted to be a part of this amazing team,’ said Fred.
‘To work with Jose Mourinho, who has won so many trophies in his time as a coach, is an opportunity not to be missed.
‘I cannot wait to get started and to meet my new team-mates. I would like to thank everyone at Shakhtar Donetsk for everything they have done for me over the past five years.’
