A Russian scientist has sparked outrage in the LGBT community after claiming bees are dying because “they are turning gay”.
Biologist Igor Tynystanov was escorted off stage at a conference after students reacted aggressively to his comments. The conference was at the University of Munich.
Tynystanov was forced to flee aided by security after an angry mob of students tried to assault him.
Members of LGBT groups worldwide have labelled the statement as “alternative facts” and “homophobic”.
One student cried out: “You’re just jealous because you’re not gay and you wish you were” before throwing a shoe.
The scientific publication Pchelovodstvo first published the research in 2016 but it has gone virtually unnoticed until now.
An LGBT group spokesman said: “Honeybees have every right to be straight, gay, bisexual or transgender.
“Their sexual identity has nothing to do with their ability to harvest honey and even less with their disappearance”
But Tynystanov has been quick to defend his comments, claiming he has nothing against homosexual people.
He claims that his research found a high rise in homosexuality in honeybees which he believes is decimating the species.
He told the Moscow Times: “Industrial pesticides are filling the environment with pheromones that are messing with the bees endocrine systems.
“These pesticides are possibly affecting the human species as well”.
The biologist says this may also explain the “demographic explosion” of homosexuals in western countries.
LGBT groups have been widely critical of Russian policies and ideas surrounding homosexuality.
Thousands of men have reportedly been detained and tortured, with several killed, for being gay.
