A Texas school police officer has been sacked after he was filmed performing a wrestling move on a 12-year-old female student.
Mobile phone footage of the incident, which took place in March at Rhodes Middle School, San Antonio, shows Officer Joshua Kehm lifting Janissa Valdez into the air and ‘bodyslamming’ her onto a concrete floor. Kehm then handcuffs her as she lies motionless while other students watch on.
Janissa’s mother, Gloria Valdez, said: “You could just hear where she hits the ground and it’s nothing but concrete, cement. She wasn’t moving. She was just knocked out. I wanted answers, and nobody could give me answers”.
San Antonio’s Independent School District Superintendent Pedro Martinez stated that this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated.
“We understand that situations can sometimes escalate to the point of requiring a physical response”, he said. “However, in this situation we believe that the extent of the response was absolutely unwarranted”.
