Death at the hands of the police force is the subject of an upcoming, controversial American drama, which will be sure to provoke a widespread reaction of unrest.
In a 10 part series that is set to broadcasted on Fox, ‘Shots Fired’ encompasses the aftermath of the event which sees an African-American policeman shoot an unarmed white teenager.
Sanaa Lathan will star as Ashe Bell – the lead investigator against the US Police department after the racially charged shooting occurs in a small North Carolina town. Others set to star in the show include Keith Paul Hunter, DeWanda Wise, Bobby Akers and Julian Brittano.
The TV show aims to reflect the recent racial tensions and police shooting incidents that have spurred demonstrations and outrage across the world.
Following the surge of support for the #BlackLivesMatter campaign, Fox’s decision to show a white man as the victim of police brutality may cause controversy. Outrage at Fox’s decision will come after over 450 black lives have been taken by the US Police Department in the past two years alone.
Whilst the decision to cast a white victim may be the subject of controversy amongst viewers, the show itself voices the questions of spectators with one woman commenting: “Of all the murdering of unarmed black men by police across this country – this is the one that the government is investigating?”
The TV series, which is set to premiere in 2017, will undoubtedly evoke a conversation of the unravelling truth of a corrupt department.
