On Friday the 4th of November Simon Cowell’s London home was burgled whilst he and his family slept. The 56-year-old’s Holland Park mansion was broken in to in the early hours of Friday morning as intruders stole jewellery and cash. Simon, his wife Lauren Silverman and their son Eric were in the house at the time of the intrusion.
A family friend has been speaking on behalf of the couple, and has stated, “Obviously Simon and Lauren are really badly shaken by this. It’s a horrible violation of their privacy. But more than anything they are incredibly relieved no one was hurt”.
The thief allegedly broke in to Cowell’s safe but he didn’t quite manage to escape with much of the stolen goods, as a heroic security guard managed to wrestle the majority of the items away from him. Cowell’s personal security guard M’Bathonha Mendes sprung in to action after finding Simon’s passport on the pavement and noticing a seedy figure disappear in to the night. Mendes drove after the burglar before reclaiming Cowell’s possessions, which were stored in a rucksack.
M’Bathonha has said, “He had a woolly hat almost covering his face and looked really suspicious. It also clicked with me he matched the description of a burglar who had robbed a house on the same street a few weeks before”. The security guard’s noble actions prevented the intruder from escaping with the bag, which was worth an estimated £500,000. Simon Cowell has remarked, “The frightening thing is the idea that there’s someone in your house. It’s not what they steal”, he also added that the security guard will be receiving a grand Christmas present
It is the second time that Cowell has had intruders in his home, in 2012 Leanne Zaloumis from south-east London was given a community order after smashing a window at his home with a broken brick. The X Factor judge had been watching television in his bedroom and was forced to call his staff when he heard a loud thud come from the bathroom. The woman was later found inside a walk in wardrobe.
